Minetest is a free alternative to the very popular Minecraft. MineTest comes installed with Fire Linux and in the videos below we have decided to showcase the game, so parents and educators can get a better view and perception of what children can learn.
The video above is basically exploration of a new world, using hand and eye co-ordination to move the mouse for looking around and using the keyboard for movement, which the keys are 'W' to move forward, 'A' to move left, 'S' to move backward and 'D' to move right.
One challenge for younger children is to move the mouse whilst still using the keyboard keys.
The purpose of this video is to demonstrate the inventory screen and making wooden tools such as pickaxes and shovels. The Inventory Screen is accessed by pressing 'I' on the keyboard.
As the game progresses players can make more durable tools from cobblestone and other materials that can be found throughout the world.
It's important to mine for more durable materials, this video shows the construction of a simple mine. It's advisable not to mine straight down.
From our mine we can now use the cobblestone to build a simple cobblestone house, apologies for us running out of bricks and having to go back and mine some more cobblestone.
We hope you have found these basic tutorials informative and hopefully with not too much practice, more elaborate structures can be made.
